Three prop guitars were prepared. The first two were pre-scored for safety and failed to deliver a satisfying smash (look for Oberst throwing down the guitar in this take when it fails to shatter.) “I asked Michael if I could take that last guitar with no pre-scoring and swing the sucker for real” said Oberst. “He smiled and said ‘Go for it!’ I swung and it splintered like a sonofabitch – just broke all apart. You can see Danielle picking up the pieces at the tail end of the final scene. “
